what happens could determine the next course of the nation. we are alive this morning with a look at what is ahead to font's presidential debate. fox 5 morning news continues right now. good morning. we are trying to look through the camera lens to find something out there for you this morning. what we are seeing instead is a lot of fog. this is actually supposed to be a look at the woodrow wilson bridge right now. can't see it. that is how thick it is out there this morning, everyone. so be careful when you are driving around on your morning commute this morning. i'm sarah simmons i'm wisdom martin. let's talk to tucker barnes right now. you saw that or you saw that picture of nothing because of the fog. >> couldn't see much of anything at all. >> that is the theme around here all over the place. got dense fog advisories for parts of the year. it is all because of a frontal system that is hanging up across the region. >> hanging out. just taking its time. >> no hurry to get out of here. i can see why, nice place. we don't have any rain but

there is your front literally draped right up and down the 95 corridor. and again, it is not moving a whole lot. with the frontal system just hanging out, our fog will stick around here for the next couple of hours. once the sun gets up, that will start to mix up the atmosphere a little bit and this front should finally get a move on and with it moving to the north, we should be in for warmer temperatures today. by warmer, i mean much warmer. how about mid-80s later this afternoon. it will be a very warm, almost humid afternoon around here with expected temperatures in the mid-80s. currently, 71 at reagan national. that is i nice warm start to the day. 60 and being from new york, we are on the mild side. 64 in new york city. rain showers, we're done with those. we have a cool june -- we have a cool down on the seven-day

forecast. we'll have that in just a minute. time now to hit the roads with on-time traffic and julie wright. >> all right. we are kind. busy. we a lot of fog to deal with out here on the roads. we are checking in with metro and they say before a power outage affecting the escalators at the woodley park station. so the elevators are working. it is just the escalators that are out of service at this time. do make note of that. elevator is working. escalator is not. southbound 270 with lanes open below speed as you continue from 85 out to the truck scales south of 109, about a 25 minute ride. we have a slow trip lined up for you now if you are traveling the beltway here at the 95/395 interchange. we had accident activity to go north on the ramp. be careful headed northbound. can you still see some activity there if you are traveling north onto 395. lanes are open. again, this is the slowdown we just mapped out for you coming in out of hyattstown.

definitely below speed here and the fog affecting our drive this morning. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. talking politics now. first of three presidential debates is tonight where president obama and governor mitt romney will stand on the same stage for the first time in eight years. >> now, in the swing state of colorado, the candidates will focus on the economy. melanie alnwick is live at the white house with a preview. >> reporter: more than 50 million people are expected to tune in tonight to witness the verbal sparring. governor rome necessity's message will be that the country cannot afford four more years of the obama administration and its policies. president obama's message will be that the country is far better off than it would have been without his policies and he needs four more years in order to be able to finish the job. now, in denver, colorado, final preparations are under way for that first presidential election debate in colorado. the showdown in denver between the president and governor mitt romney will take place at the

university of denver. now, unlike debates in the past, this one will be a little bit different. it will be a 90-minute debate broken up into six 15-minute discussions as organizers call it. they believe that will help views are got a good understanding of the candidates' views on key issues. there are few undecided voters right now but a strong debate performance can change the direction or pause the moment up of a presidential contest. an old speech of president obama's is now making new rounds on cable network and also on the internet. here is some of what obama had to say. >> look at what happened in new orleans aened along the gulf coast when katrina hit. people ask me whether they thought race was the reason the response was so slow. i said well, no, this

administration was color-blind in its incompetence. but everyone here knows that the disaster and the poverty happened long before the hurricane hit. >> reporter: now, conservatives are posting segments of that 2007 speech. it was given by then candidate obama to clergy at hampton university. they say it's class warfare and full of racially charged speech. however, the obama campaign is dismissing the criticism. they are saying the reairing of these old clips is simply just an attempt to change the conversation away from those secretly recorded comments by mitt romney that surfaced two week ago with things that he had had to say about americans who do not pay taxes. >> the presidential debate starts tonight at 9:00. you can catch it right here live on fox 5 followed by live coverage and analysis on fox 5 news at 10:00 and also the edge

at 11:00. bad weather forced the plane carrying vice president i don't bide ton delay landings two times yesterday. while approaching the charlotte international airport, the pilot abruptly pulled up and had to circumstance follow more than a half hour because of thunderstorms. it caused mr. bideen to be late for a campaign event. later, fog forced the plane to land the dulles international instead ever andrews air force base. maryland governor mart uno'malley has a plan to help prevent the widespread power outages that residents often deal with during storms. according to the "washington post," he will release a report today that proposes a new surcharge. customers would pay an extra dollar or two a month so that pepco and other companies have funding available to strengthen the grid. the hope is crews could complete several years of planned tree trimmings and line

burials within the next two years. phil mendelsohn introduced a bill yesterday that would allow voters to approve i achange in the district charter that would block federal budget control. it would give d.c. leaders full control of the budget but also keep federal budget issues separate from the district. also making headline this morning, changes to what secret service agents are allowed to do on assignment following that prostitution scandal earlier this year. >> the pope's former butler takes the stand. hear more on why he says he stole private letters and what punishment he could face if he is convicted. we're back in just a moment. properly report sandusky to police. he is seeking millions of dollars in damages. sandusky was found guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse earlier this year. testimony continues today in the trial of pope benedict xvi's former butler. he is charged with aggravated theft. prosecutors say he leaked private documents for a journalist detailing alleged vatican power struggles and corruption. he admits he made photocopies of private correspondence on an office photocopier in plain sight. he says he is innocent of the aggravated theft charge. in the wake of scandal in colombia, there are? you? rules in the secret service handbook. fox news obtained an e-mail stating that moderate amounts of alcohol may be consumed while agents are off duty but alcohol use is protected within 10 hours of reporting for duty. you may recall an inspector general's investigation found six secret service agents brought prostitutes back to their hotel room in colombia back in april. k in april.

[ darius' mother ] i remember as a toddler, when darius started walking, there was no stopping him. he actually would run from us and we always had to catch him. and then, at four years old, the sports started, and he never stopped. once he started, he never stopped. ♪ ♪ to be told that your son probably would have to stop playing sports forever, was just heartbreaking. we make medical devices that enable physicians to make an accurate assessment of the patient's condition and potentially save their lives. in case you didn't know, today is international walk to school day. have fun walking in the fog, kids. the program is an effort to raise awareness for pedestrian safety and promote physical activity among children. a number of police, fire and rescue workers and elected officials will be joining students for events at local schools today. kids across the country and also in 40 other countries are also taking part in this. >> they will need some flashlights if they are out walking this morning because, man, that fog is ridiculous. this is a live look outside

>> i know so she gave you a ride to cool every day. >> what was it, five miles uphill in the snow? >> i remember it being more than a mile. dense fog advisory to the east. anne arundel county, baltimore city, baltimore county under a dense fog advisory. this has just been extended a little further south. dense fog can be found honestly anywhere. even counties that aren't dealing with the dense fog advisory at this moment as visibilities area-wide are greatly reduced this morning. we are nice and warm. off to the north and west, 60s in manassas. 63 in frederick. it will a warm day. plenty of humidity. high temperatures will be in the mid 1r0. should be some sunshine working in a little later this afternoon. i think the morning hours will be fog-fill wade lot of clouds around. by late morning, we'll start to

see some breaks in the clouds. we should be dry later today. we might squeeze out a little more in the way of mist this morning. not expecting any measurable rain around here. our frontal system will finally slide far enough east, we'll take the clouds on out of the equation. we'll get drier air working in by tomorrow. 85 today. early fog and then here comes the sun a warm afternoon. 85 as mentioned. winds out of south here at about five miles per hour. the temperatures a good 10, 12- degree above normal mild overnight. partly cloudy skies. here is your accu-weather seven- day. thursday and friday look great. highs near 80. we'll get some late day rain saturday an even sunday and then a big cooldown. that is serious fall weather there by sunday and monday with highs only in the low 60s. i think we'll have some 30s around here by monday morning. not too far off to the west. we'll have the coldest air of

everyone at the national zoo has been keeping a very close eye on mei xiang since the loss of her panda cub last month. and now we have some good news to tell you about. zoo keepers say she is getting back to her regular routine. now, over the weekend, she went into her outdoor enclosure. it was the first time mei xiang want out since her cub died. she still spends most of her affects alone in her den but her appetite is improving a portion of the giant panda habitat reopened over the weekend and the zoo hopes to reopen it fully soon. plus ton this incredible story out of massachusetts eye poodle survived an 11-mile drive reaching speeds up to 50 miles per hour stuck in the front grill of a car. the driver hit the dog and didn't realize what had happened until another driver signaled them. the poodle is doing fine but did suffer a concussion out of this. officials are trying to track down the dog's owner. poor dog! >> i know. still an amazing story that i

dog could get trapped inside of a grill of a car. she didn't get flung back into traffic or something. that is incredible. cog up income, we go live to fox business network in new york. >> american airlines is in damage control. loose seats, labor talks and flight cancellations are leading to a whole lot of problems for the carrier. we'll tell you what is happening. september. that comes out on friday. we get a report on the services sector. this is the biggest part of the economy. financial services, people would work in the hotel industry, et cetera. so pretty big reports. ahead of that, we are showing some green, like you and me this morning. futures are up but not by too much. >> great minds think alike. well, let's talk about american airlines aing bit here. this news of loose seats on airplanes. this is not good for american airlines business. what is the latest on this this morning. >> it really isn't. they are expecting 11 more jets today on top of 36 that have already been inspected and we've seen six different instances of loose seats. imagine you are going to take the family away for christmas. would you want to book on american? for the past two months, they've been canceling flights. they are bankrupt. they've been in bankruptcy protection since november.

they have this latest issue of safety. there has been some speculation because the pilots, the union there at american has been without a contract for sick years now. there has been some speculation that maybe at the tinkered with the seats. other people are saying american useed a different group to fix some of the problems on the plane and they outsourced and that is the problem. american denies both of those allegations but obviously, this just adds to the pr headache for american. >> it certainly does. either way they have to get it fixed. all the planes are so full these days. you can't afford for something like that to be happening. all right. thank you so much. we'll see you tomorrow. >> all right. >> coming up next, the redskins come out in support of a key issue on the ballot in maryland this fall. but first, back to the morning's big story. president obama and rub no, ma'am me mitt romney gearing up to tonight's debate as a clip from the past is causing some controversy this morning. we'll be right back. right lanes. so be careful working your way past the scene. center of the roadway blocked off here. looking for the accident not necessarily on 207 but reported on 121 so we'll keep an eye on this in your next report. that's a check of your fox 5 on-timetraffic. on-timetraffic. to politics now. first of three presidential debates kicks off tonight. candidates will take the stage together at the university of denver. >> colorado has nine electoral votes up for grabs too maybing it a key prize for both candidates. fox 5's melanie alnwick has more. >> reporter: final prep rigs are under way for tonight's first presidential election debate in colorado. the showdown between president obama and republican candidate mitt romney will take place at the university of denver. unlike debates in the past, organizers say this event will be a little different. >> so what is different about the format is that we're dividing the hour and a half

debate into six discussion segments. we think that those extended discussion periods will help the views are around the world really get a sense of the candidates' views on the key issues. >> reporter: the economy is a key issue but since colorado is one of the few states that appears to be weathering the national economic downturn, some won't be voting with their pocketbooks. >> i'm up in the air to who i'm going to vote for. i have my reasons for why i'm still up in the air and it comes down to do i want to see a better economy or lose rights. that is the way i look at it. >> i need to know that whichever one is actually listening to the average person, the one who has a fixed income, the one who has minimum wage. >> reporter: one political analyst says this first debate is important since both men have something to prove. >> the public wants to see if mitt romney is an acceptable alit weretive. they sort of know the

course the push to ban football at a high school in dover, new hampshire. dr.paul butler is a retired physician. he is also on the school board. dr.butler says the sport puts players at risk of brain damage later on in life. dover high school's athletic director points out that the school is part of a concussion prevention program and that the school board chair and vice chair say they will not support the proposed football ban. >> i understand his concern but no one is going to let that happen. >> this is a tough call there because you do want the young people to be safe but it is a sport. what are you going to do? >> i know. i'm not going to go into that conversation. >> hard to push back on that one. >> you can talk about weather. >> soon, they'll be playing flag football in high school. that's what's going to happen. >> i thought you weren't going to weigh in.

question from this 10-year-old boy. not true. we are subject to some natural disasters. we're somewhat fortunate in that we don't encounter some of the extremes that other parts of the country do. the west coast of the united states as we all know is earthquake prone. the midsection of the country is very prone to tornadoes, tornado alley. but we can have earthquakes as we've learned recently. we can have relatively weak tornadoes usually. hushs im-- hurricanes impact us and like. >> i think the difference is, in the washington area, we don't have unpredictable natural disasters. that is my theory. so in parts of the country, we can't predict tornadoes with more than five or 10 minutes, 15 minutes notice. the earthquakes, of course, cysts are working hard on it

but we haven't uncovered ways to give you a forecast if there will be an earthquake. around here, we can. we-- >> for earthquakes? >> no, around here work he can predict our natural disasters. last year, with we've had hurricane irene. next time you go to visit washington monument, it is close because we have an earthquake here too. we do see plenty of action around here. i think weather-wise, we have much more in the way of extremes than most the country. we can be 105 in the summertime appear zero in the winter. >> which makes predid iing the weather in this region quite interesting. >> makes it fun. >> we are not out of the woods
